I’m sure that all the drivers know what are the reasons for the accidents (I surely do! :) ) But not all the time we respect the essential driving tips. That doesn’t mean that we have to drive such badly as “crashing experts” do!

This top is made by driver safety and risk management specialist Peak Performance Management (many of you know this as PPM) and it is based upon real life experience.

No. 1 - Low speed manoeuvring

No.1 is referring at low speed collisions making a maneuvering or parking. It usually gets to bumper damage or a scratch, but it can also causes big accidents. PPM advices drivers to do everything with calm and very slow, with their eyes through both mirrors and screens, front and rear. Do that if you want to succeed!

No. 2 - Driving too close to the vehicle in front

No.2 is driving too close to the vehicle in front. This accident can be avoided by applying the “2 second rule” ( I also know the rule of 50 meters, but this one is good, too! ), that means that you have to leave at least 2 seconds between you and the car in front of you. This will help you stay out of trouble!

No. 3 - Stopping to close to the vehicle in front

No.3 is stopping to close to the vehicle in front. You can avoid this by stopping to see where the rear wheels for the front vehicle are touching the tarmac. It good to know that you have to leave more space between your car and the front one if that’s a HGV!

No. 4 - Excessive speed

No.4 is the excessive speed for the road situation. This “problem” I’ve wanted to put on No.1 and I surely believe that is the biggest one! You must know that excessive speed causes very big accidents! My (and not only) advice is to stay within posted speed limits and stay prudence to anything that can cause you loosing the car control.

No. 5 - Tiredness while driving

No.5 and most common fault across the World is tiredness whilst driving and falling asleep at the wheel. This surely can be a cause for “ugly” accidents and I don’t even want to think about that! The advice is to take regular breaks (the standard recommendation is to take a 15 minutes break for every 2 hours of driving). Any attempt to drive long distances without any break is not good for you!

No. 6 - Moving into other vehicles’ blind spots

No.6 is moving into the blind spot of another vehicle and being side-swiped when the other vehicle doesn’t see you and pulls out. Everyone can avoid this one by using the door mirrors of the other vehicle (if you see the other driver’s face in he’s mirror, he can see your face, too). Anyway keep your eyes in all directions!

No. 7 - Braking reactively or too late

No.7 is braking reactively or too late for the situation with the likelihood that the following vehicle will run into the back of you. It necessary that you always “announce” what you want to do next: always use the winking lights and apply the brake lights in time!

No. 8 - Lack of hazard awareness

No.8 is lack of hazard awareness by company drivers often resulting in harsh breaking that can causes accidents. You have to remember that precipitation always spoil good work, so be very carefully and drive safely!

No. 9 - Not allowing for different “driver types”

No.9 is the fault of not allowing for different “driver types”, such as HGVs, taxis, buses and any others. All these examples are constrains on their driving styles so you have to be aware of al driver types around you and always to pay attention to the road.

No. 10 - Poor road positioning

No.10 is poor road positioning causing vision problems for other drivers. If another driver cannot see you until the last minute… than he surely must put glasses! I’m joking :) ! If another driver cannot see you in time, this will make him to react too late and that may cause an accident. Always stay in touch with everything that it’s happening in traffic and in the same time stay relaxed and enjoy driving!
