What is a Tuning Chip?


I bet that you are wondering what means, how it made and what is the final result implanting a tuning chip! Well, I will try to resolve this enigma by this article.
Redoing the soft of the chip or chip tuning is almost the same thing, the difference consist of opening or not opening the computer. To redo the soft you don’t have to open the computer, the writing-reading operation is made by a socket connected between a laptop and the car computer. And than, a special soft rewrites the initial information from the fabric chip.
I will take for example a car with a 1.4 MPI engine.

The standard car, without any improvements (without a filter, without sport ejection), a 1.4 model with air conditioning, 75 hp, let’s say that is comfortable and spacious, too. That was just for fun! I made this model to look like a family model, not a sport one, with small consumption. We will make some changes to this model engine to improve its performances. What we need? For the beginning: a new tuning chip, a directed induction kit and a sport ejection, following a brand new set of agreeable rims with higher diameter, of 16” and an exterior kit.

The computer…

Computer is near the battery, well protected by a metallic carcass, hard to unpack. The computer is Siemens one and has a last generation infrastructure.

Writing the information…
You must unpack the metallic carcass very carefully; than you take off the chip from the mother board (Kids don’t do this at home, because your parent’s car can remain without any chip!). Be very carefully, because any changes must be made on the chip, not on computer’s processor! The processor is near the chip. You must obtain necessary papers regarding the normal parameters of the car and than you make specific adjustments about everything.

First you have to modify the partial forward flow with +2-4 degrees. Second is to modify the advance castigation with +2 degrees. Third is to modify the partial injection and to optimize the injection tenses. Number 4 consist of swelling the fuel consumption; you have to rise the consumption with 4 comparing the original settings. Number 5 is about the shifts limit. Shifts limit is at 6,000 rpm from the fabric, and now it will be of 6,400 rpm. That means, not that the stages will be changing only at 6,400 rpm; this limit it’s preferable to be touch only in special cases (to take over, to start very fast). It is recommended to change stages at maximum torque.

Finishing…

The chip is putted on a special conceived support, and with a cable connected between the support and the laptop. You have to delete initial dates and you have to introduce the new settings. After you introduce all necessary data, the chip is stick back on the mother board and you have to reassemble computer’s carcass and to set up on the car.

The power of the car is better with 10 percents, the car has a better couple of torque, and what is very good is that the car consumption is the same. Making bigger the engine performances it is possible to have higher fuel consumption. It is recommended that during a soft change, as a tuning chip, for higher performances it’s better to make changes on air induction and on sport ejection. After all the changes the engine has more with 7-10 hp and offers an effective power that you can feel on the highway. So, hit the road, Jack!
